There is one way, and one way only that Iago’s plot against Othello, Desdemona, and Cassio was thoroughly completed. Luck. Emilia is a bystander that with one wrong moves send her world crumbling to the ground around her. Desdemona drops a delicate handkerchief when her husband is feeling ill. Othello believes lies that his wife is having an affair. Cassio took Iago’s rank in the army and Iago wants revenge.
A bystander
A handkerchief
A military official willing to listen
An innocent man caught in the grips of an evil mastermind
All these factors are combined to develop an evil scheme to get Iago the job he rightfully deserved. Iago has been not so patiently waiting in line behind Othello for a higher ranking in the military. When the time comes for a soldier to be put in the position, Othello chose Cassio over Iago.
The beginning of the play Othello leads readers to believe that Iago just wants to take Cassio down so he can have the higher position. Nearing the end of the play, it is uncovered that Iago is out for blood and the highest position possible and that killing off one person will not be enough for this madman to be satisfied.
Iago has and elaborate plan to take down each of his “friends”, one by one. But it is only through luck that his plan is put into action. It all started the fatal day Desdemona dropped the handkerchief Othello gave her as a wedding gift. Othello was ill, Desdemona tried to rach out and help him, in the midst a small white handkerchief was dropped. Emilia Iago’s wife luckily was there to witness the actions going on and as her friends exit, she picks it up. Not only does she pick it up, but she doesn’t call Desdemona back to give it to her. She takes it to her husband Iago. If not for Othello ailing, Desdemona dropping the handkerchief and Emilia in the shadows, Iago would have no way of getting the key piece to his puzzle.
Iago claims that the way to break up Desdemona and Othello is when “Blood is made dull with the act of sport” (2.1.222). Desdemona will get bored of being with Othello and Iago’s plans can be set into motion. These plans are never used though for Iago is given Desdemona’s handkerchief. A sacred piece of the pie that was missing in Iago’s promisingly flawless plan.
Iago also has strikes luck when Othello is convinced his wife is cheating, Othello overhears a conversation between Cassio and Iago. Iago makes it seem that Cassio is talking of Desdemona that he wants to marry her up, and Othello goes over the edge.
